How do I obtain a
library card? Is it free? In order to obtain a library card to use the computers and to check out
materials, you must have a valid military i.d. and complete a simple
application. There is no cost for the card.
Does the library have
videos or
DVDs?
Books-on-Tape or
CDs? The Barksdale Library has a limited collection of VHS video tapes and DVDs
(both recreational and educational, there is a special children's collection of
videos). Users may check out 3 tapes or DVDs per family for a 7 day period.
The library has audiocassettes, including Books-on-Tape and Books-on-CD. These
may be checked out for a 2 week period, the same as regular books. Again, there
is a special collection of Books-on-Tape for children, some with read-along
books.
Does the library have
computers? Internet service? The library have 16 computers for internet
access and for word processing and/or spreadsheet programs. Users must have a
Barksdale Base Library card. Users generally have 30 minutes provided for
computer use. If no other patrons are waiting they may receive additional
time. Downloading and installing of programs is not allowed, due to firewall
and virus considerations. Printing is available at a cost of 10 cents per page.
Does the library provide copier or fax services? The library does offer copier service for $0.10 per copy. Fax service is
$1.00 per page (Local and 800 number) and $1.50 per page (Long distance
number). Received fax is $1.00 per page, our fax number is 318-752-0509.
Can I renew my
books online? Yes. You can renew your books through our online catalog.
You must renew your item before it is overdue, once the item is overdue you must
call circulation desk at 318-456-4101 to request a renewal over the phone.
Do you have
CLEP and
DANTES materials? Yes. Books may be checked out for 2 weeks, but cannot be renewed due to the
high turnover of these items. Videos are available for check-out for a 7-day
period, again without renewal due to the high numbers of requests. In addition
to these books and videos, the general nonfiction collection of the library
supports basic information covered within the test preparation guides.
What
Reference resources are available? The library offers in-person reference services utilizing print resources
and offering assistance in accessing online resources. Some of these online
services include: Jane's Online, EBSCO Auto Repair, various Galenet
databases, SIRS for social issues, Newsbank, ReferenceUSA, CountryWatch, and
FirstSearch. Some databases can also be accessed from home.
Does
the library have current best-sellers? The library carries a subscription to
McNaughton's books.
What are
e-books, and how do I sign up? NetLibrary's ebooks provides free full-text
access to over 6,000 online fiction and nonfiction books from your home or
office computer after you sign up using the computer at the library.
Do you have
children's programming? A regularly-scheduled story time is available from September ~ April (Story
Time Calendar). The Summer Reading Program provides reading
opportunities for children of all ages during the months of June and July.
Storytelling and crafts programs are available, and a calendar is given as
children register in SRP. Special programming is planned throughout the year
for all ages (for example: Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage
Month, and Black History Month).
What
newspapers and magazines are available? The library receives over 125 weekly and monthly magazine titles. Daily newspapers:Shreveport Times, USA Today Sunday editions: Shreveport Times Weekly newspapers:The Bombardier (Base newspaper), Bossier Tribune,
Washington Times, Air Force Times, Defense Times, Federal Times
Are Tax forms available? The library carries Federal tax forms and some
publications. Louisiana resident and non-resident forms are also available.
Additionally, staff members can assist in locating forms on the internet (IRS).
